GAWA’s Young Geographer of the Year competition 2023

GAWA’s Young Geographer of the Year competition 2023

The World at 8 Billion

On the 15th November 2022, the world’s population reached the 8 billion milestone. This
moment is cause for celebration, as infant/maternal mortality rates decline and life
expectancies increase. It is also a time to reflect on how to balance our social,
environmental and economic needs to achieve sustainable outcomes for generations to
come.
This is the sixth year of GAWA’s ‘Young Geographer of the Year’ competition. The
concepts of place, space, environment, interconnection and sustainability are central to
the study of Geography. This year’s competition allows students to explore sustainability
as the World has reached a population of 8 billion. Students should consider the impacts
of changing demographics, the impacts this has on resources and the environment.
There will also be implications for future planning, which authorities around the world will
have to face.

Due date for all categories: Years 7 to 12 is: Thursday, 21st July 2023
